HOW WERE THE WINNERS CHOSEN?
Thomson Reuters assigned each hospital in the study group to one of five comparison groups according to bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement. Within the comparison groups, each hospital was ranked on the basis of its performance on key performance measures. Thomson Reuters then summed each hospital's performance-measure ranking to arrive at a total ranking for the hospital. Everest award winners were the National winners that also had the fastest rates of long-term (five-year) improvement.
