What does a 100 Top Hospitals National award mean to a board or staff member?

Achieving national benchmark performance does not happen overnight. A hospital earns the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® National award after years of effort. It is a reward that recognizes a hospital's entire staff for working together as a team, staying focused on a mission and goals for improvement, measuring performance and taking action on the results. A facility named a 100 Top Hospitals National winner has built a strong organization and should be proud of its excellent work.

The most important aspect of the 100 Top Hospitals award is that it measures overall hospital performance. This cannot be achieved solely by one person's leadership or the efforts of the professionals who care directly for the patient. Rather, the 100 Top Hospitals award recognizes the contribution of each individual in the hospital who helps improve patient outcomes and safety, increases efficiency, reduces costs and helps grow services for the people in the community. This is an award that honors the teamwork of a board, executive team, hospital staff and the medical staff all working together toward improvement goals.

Earning a 100 Top Hospitals National award is difficult — every year, only a handful of hospitals in each category qualify as one of the 100 winners. This year, the total number of hospitals eligible for the study was 3,018, and the number of hospitals selected, by category, for the study and as winners are listed below.
